Purity

Karat measures gold content out of 24, so 24K is almost pure and 18K is 75% gold.

How the calculation works

Your weight is first converted to grams: 1 troy ounce is 31.1035 g, 1 tola is 11.6638 g and 1 kilogram is 1,000 g. The calculator then multiplies by the purity of your karat, for example 22/24 (about 91.6%) for 22K, to find the grams of pure gold.

That pure gold weight is multiplied by today's spot price per gram, converted into the currency you chose. The result is what the metal itself is worth at the market price, before any costs a buyer or seller adds.

Common questions

What is the spot price of gold?
It is the current market price for immediate delivery of pure gold, usually quoted per troy ounce in US dollars. It changes continuously while markets are open and serves as the reference that most dealers price from.
Why does a jeweller quote a different price?
When you buy, jewellers add making charges for the craftsmanship, a premium and sometimes taxes. When you sell, buyers usually pay below spot to cover refining and their margin. Spot value is a reference point, not an offer.
What is the difference between 22K and 24K?
24K is close to pure gold (about 99.9%). 22K is 22 parts gold out of 24, about 91.6%, with other metals added for strength. That is why 22K jewellery is worth less per gram than 24K bars or coins of the same weight.
How do tola and troy ounce convert to grams?
One tola equals 11.6638 grams and one troy ounce equals 31.1035 grams. A troy ounce is heavier than an ordinary ounce (28.35 g), so always check which one a price refers to.
